Join Us

Welcome to the Cork Non-Fiction Writers Group, we are so glad you are considering joining us.  We proceed with what we hope are loose enough set of rules to set us free and are writing and publishing, but with enough boundaries to establish context and to keep our work steadily progressing.

The Cork Non-Fiction Writers Group started in June of 2008 and was the brainchild of Alana James, who, as a recent immigrant to Ireland from the United States, was looking for fellow writers and people who could offer her work good critique. By trial and error and respecting the natural growth of the group over time, we have come to these basic guidelines:
  • We meet on the second and fourth Thursday of every month at the main Cork City Library on South Parade, from 11am - 1pm,  taking only one break on the fourth Thursday of December.
  • Anyone may bring anything they have written to read, as long as it is nonfiction, this includes poetry.
  • We request submissions by e-mail (through Google groups) as well as writing being brought to the group for reading; this gives time for those of us who like to ruminate over things and has been shown to enliven the conversation.
  • We request that you bring six to 10 copies of your work when you intend to read it, so that everyone may follow along.
In the spring of 2010, Alana gave a workshop for the group on being published, the outcome of which was that we started our own journey towards publication by starting a blog. The website address is: http://www.corknonfictionwritersgroup.blogspot.com/. Themes are chosen for the blog at the beginning of each year, and all writers are open to write submissions for the current and upcoming themes. People working on submissions for the blog have the right to read first at our meetings.

In December 2014, our second collection of stories and poetry was published by Cork-based imprint, Anchor and Bee.

To make our submission and communication process easier on our webmaster, we all subscribe to it and post to a Google group. If you wish to be invited to that group, please send an email to: CorkWriters gmail.com with 'Wish to join' in the subject heading. Send this from the email you would like to use and your invitation will be sent shortly.

We meet at the Cork City Central Library on Grand Parade on the 2nd & 4th Thursday of each month from 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. No membership fee! Just call in, listen, join in. You will be very welcome.
